Exactech Places Profits Over Safety

On Feb. 7, 2022, Exactech added to an August 2021 recall with an urgent alert regarding injuries and complications caused by its Optetrak and Truliant knee and Vantage ankle devices. Surgeons are now in the process of sending letters to nearly 150,000 individuals who had these devices surgically implanted since 2004.

Exactech has known about problems with its knee and ankle devices for many years but delayed the urgent alert until now. Despite these safety concerns, the manufacturer added new products over the years by using the FDA’s 510(k) approval process, which allows manufacturers to avoid extensive safety testing by claiming that its new products are “substantially equivalent” to existing devices.

Injuries and Medical Complications

Defective polyethylene inserts used in Exactech products have compromised these devices, leading to a high rate of medical complications, including loose tibial components, aseptic loosening, pain, limited mobility, knee swelling, and sensitivity due to loosening of the knee joint.

A 2012 study of 110 patients with Exactech Optetrak knee replacements reported that more than 1 in 10 patients needed another surgery within five years, 20% of patients required painkillers because of complications, and another 22% of the implants were showing signs of loosening.

The recall affects tibial inserts and liner components from the following knee and ankle replacement systems:

0

Individuals implanted with Optetrak products

0

Individuals who have Optetrak “Logic” devices installed

0

Individuals implanted with Truliant products

0
